Important microscopic level processes take place in the distal part of the lungs. Until now, not only were the alveoli unreachable by conventional endoscopes, but no modality could provide cellular information of this region.
Moreover, histology specimens, when they can be obtained in the distal lungs, are often of poor quality and generally do not lead to a conclusive diagnosis.
Probe-based Confocal Laser Endomicroscopy (pCLE) with the Cellvizio® system is intended to provide real-time dynamic microscopic imaging of the distal lungs that is currently unavailable using any other technique. Real-time dynamic imaging with pCLE may open a whole new world in interventional pulmonology.
New relevant information available in real time
Cellvizio can be combined with advanced endoscopic modalities and electromagnetic navigation bronchoscopy (ENB) and therefore allows physicians to visualize the cellular nature of the bronchial tree in real-time. This direct visualization may allow better targeting of peripheral nodules or other lesions in the distal lungs for tissue sampling, as shown in the literature and in the case report below.
